Toys for Tots

For the last three years, Dr. Ron Murphy has participated in Toys for Tots as well as spearheaded a local campaign to improve literacy in his community. He sponsored 2,500 books and placed them into his local community reading programs as well as into the homes of the less fortunate children.

Dr. Murphy knows that a recent study of low-income neighborhoods in Chicago, for example, showed a ratio of one book available for every 300 children across the United States. Tens of millions of poor Americans can’t afford to buy books at all.

He was recently quoted saying, “I can see the writing on the wall. If our youth do not have access to books, they won’t read. If they won’t read, they won’t learn and gain knowledge. Thus they will not become productive members of our communities. Illiteracy is linked to drugs, crime, all manner of things that will destroy out neighborhoods. We need to come together as parents, professionals, and members of our communities and do something about it. We can directly infuse our communities with books and build our next generation. It is our responsibility, and I’m taking action here and now and saying NO to illiteracy!”

Dr. Murphy has joined the Toys for Tots programs as one of his key focuses for the last three years. Through this program, and others, he has received several recognition awards, including the Commander’s Award.
