Fluoride is a common topic around oral health but most of our clients don't know exactly what it is or why they want it. We know that we should brush and floss every day, we know that sugar can cause tooth decay and we know that fluoride is good for our teeth but we don't know much else about it. We wanted to provide you with a quick overview of the topic because we know that being informed is what helps us all make better decisions for our health!

What Is Fluoride and Why Should I Care?

Fluoride is a type of colorless, odorless, tasteless mineral that is often added to oral care products and community drinking water. It helps keeps teeth free of cavities by adding mineral deposits to the areas of the teeth that can be damaged by the foods we eat.

Where Do I Get Fluoride?

  • Water - Most communities have fluoride added to their drinking water. Since water authorities have been adding this mineral, up to 60% fewer cavities have been reported and children are experiencing the biggest benefits.
  • Toothpaste - Many of today's toothpaste companies include fluoride in their products. Sometimes this ingredient is labeled as sodium monofluorophosphate, stannous fluoride or sodium fluoride. Brushing with these products twice a day or after each meal can greatly reduce cavities and tooth decay.
  • Rinses - As with most toothpaste varieties, most mouth rinses include fluoride on the ingredients label. Rinsing with these can help strengthen teeth, especially in geriatric and pediatric patients.
  • Professional Fluoride Treatment - If you're unable to get the fluoride you need through your diet, drinking water or oral care products, your dentist can provide a treatment that applies the fluoride directly to your teeth. These treatments can be very effective for children but some adults may not need them.
