How Do I Know if It's an Emergency?

When you feel pain or anything out of the ordinary, it's easy to panic and become unsure of what to do. In an emergency, it's important to understand the severity of the situation so that you can take appropriate action. Here are a few tips to help you decide what steps to take should you find yourself in a dental emergency situation.

Tooth Got Knocked Out

If your tooth was knocked out due to a serious injury, you should contact your dentist immediately. If they are not available, go to the emergency room for evaluation. Try to place the tooth back in the socket, if possible. Otherwise, put the tooth in salt water or milk and bring it with you to your dental appointment.

Failed Prior Dental Work

If you have a crown, filling, or other dental work that becomes broken or damaged, do your best to protect the area and schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

If you've chipped a tooth, contact your dentist as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

Toothache

Since toothaches can be caused by a number of factors that range from minor to urgent, your dentist is the best person to determine the cause. If you have a painful tooth, contact your dentist right away.

Sports Injury

Anytime you suffer a sudden blow to your mouth or jaw, it's important to visit the emergency room as quickly as possible. Then, be sure to follow up with your dentist so that they can provide any additional treatment necessary.
