You’ve probably heard it all your life, and repeated too: “Sugar will give you cavities!” “Sugar will rot your teeth out!” But is it necessarily true?
Well, yes and no. It is not sugar, specifically, that causes tooth decay, but the carbohydrates in sugar that bacteria love. Sugar is just one of the many carbs that can land you in our chairs. Sugary foods tend to be sticky and get stuck in teeth, which increases the time that the favorite food of bacteria is on your teeth.
The best thing you can do for your teeth, if you eat foods high in sugar, is to brush your teeth afterwards to remove the residue.
