Summertime Snacking: The Best Choices for Healthy Teeth

Summertime is a time when kids are on the move. With all the running around they do, providing healthy foods and drinks is essential. Part of a healthy body is healthy teeth, free from cavities. Preventing cavities and maintaining good oral hygiene in children may seem hard. At the office of Dr. Ronald A. Murphy, DMD, we know how to help childrenmaintain oral health. It all starts with what they eat and drink.

Foods to Eat

  • Dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt. They contain little sugar and a lot of calcium. Calciumis an essential mineral for healthy tooth development and maintenance.
  • Lean protein sources such as poultry, eggs, and fish are also excellent choices. They provide protein and phosphorus, both of which contribute to healthy teeth.
  • Fruits and vegetables are imperative to overall health. In the case of healthy teeth, they contain high amounts of water to help keep them clean.

Foods to Avoid

Plaquefeeds on carbs and sugar. Many children have favorite foods that contain high amounts of both. Start by avoiding these;

  • Candy
  • Chips
  • Fruit snacks
  • Sugar-laden cereals
  • Pre-packaged pastries

Drinks to Drink

  • Water. Water is the best option when choosing what to drink. Water is free from damaging added sugars. It also contains fluoride. Fluorideis beneficial because it helps strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.
  • Milk is also a suitable choice because it contains a lot of calcium.

Drinks to Avoid

Much like sugar and carb-laden foods, sugary beverages contribute to plaque development and tooth decay. Avoid the following;

  • Soda
  • Fruit juice
  • Sports drinks
