Mouthwash Can be Both Bad and Good

Mouthwash can be both bad and good. Rinsing with an over-the-counter mouthwash can help prevent cavities and make your mouth feel fresh. Mouthwash aids in the fight against periodontal disease, a condition better known more simply as gum disease. Canker sores are soothed when mouthwash enters the mouth, because it acts like a detox. When looking at the downside, preterm, low-weight babies have been linked to gum disease. Mouthwash may help with certain risks and problems in the future, but remember, always weigh the risks against the benefits.

Like everything in the world, mouthwash has its benefits but risks do arise, too. Although certain mouthwash can soothe canker sores, too much of the alcohol contained in some brands of mouthwash can irritate them. Many people use mouthwash to get fresher breath, but it is said that bad breath is only masked, rather than fully addressed and treated. The bad breath does goes away when brushing, not just rinsing. As a precautionary note, do your best to limit or eliminate the amount of alcohol in your choice of mouthwash.

Overall, it really depends on the health habits of the mouthwash user. If you take care of yourself, mouthwash can be an aid. On the other hand, if you try to just substitute mouthwash for toothpaste and brushing, it could hurt you in the long run.
